Grant Writing: The Story Behind the Numbers
A strong budget tells a story on its own. A good grant writer knows that the funder wants to see a budget that will adequately support the project scope presented in the grant narrative. Not only does this mean clearly describing the main income and expense line items with accurate numbers and a strong budget narrative, but also explaining nuances like surpluses, deficits, and other “below the line” expenses like depreciation.
Presenters Julie Assel, GPC and Julie Alsup, GPC will provide examples of the technical components of budget creation, and also explore how the grant writer is often the liaison between the program staff and the finance department in the budget conversation. You’ll learn:
- how to communicate to your finance people that a grant budget needed for a scope of work in a proposal may not completely align with what they consider to be the program or organizational budget
- how to describe to a funder that you have requested more grant dollars in pending grant proposals than you actually need.
