This seminar will provide an analysis of pornography’s influence and explore how it may be addressed in the prevention and treatment of sexually abusive behavior. Readily available and aggressively marketed online, exposure to pornography is now mainstream. Porn has become a default sex educator for many young people. Its influence is shaping sexual expectations and norms, with serious implication for young people’s capacity to understand and negotiate free and full consent, mutual response and gender equality. Pornography also commonly portrays and reinforces harmful racial and gender stereotypes that reinforce prejudices and create conditions for other injustices to thrive.
