Many organizations claim to be practicing relationship fundraising, but in reality there is little agreement about what that actually means and what would constitute a relationship approach.
In this session Adrian Sargeant, perhaps the world’s foremost academic expert on fundraising, takes apart the notion of relationship fundraising and explores the social psychology of how human beings form relationships. He’ll report on latest findings from the Hartsook Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy at the University of Plymouth on the relational approach to fundraising from recent testing in the US and UK, including:
- the results achieved
- how behavior was influenced
- the difference made on how people experienced the relationship, and
- how good people felt about their giving
Adrian Sargeant is Professor of Fundraising and the Director of the Hartsook Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy at the University of Plymouth. He was formerly the first Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. He also holds visiting appointments at Avila University in Kansas City and the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, Queensland University of Technology. He has received many awards for his services to the profession, notably being named to the prestigious Nonprofit Times
Power and Influence List in the United States in 2010. In 2016 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Institute of Fundraising and a Civil Society Award for his Outstanding Contribution to Fundraising.
