Together We Rise: An Evening with Women’s March on Washington Artistic Director Paola Mendoza
Paola Mendoza, a national organizer and the artistic director of the Women’s March on Washington, D.C., in January 2017, will be the featured speaker in a Women’s History Month event hosted by Park University. “Together We Rise: An Evening with Women’s March on Washington Artistic Director Paola Mendoza” will be held on Monday, March 26, starting at 7 p.m. in Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the University’s Parkville Campus. Admission to the event is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested at www.park.edu/togetherwerise.
Mendoza, a film director, activist and author, was one of the driving forces behind the Women’s March on Washington on Jan. 21, 2017, considered the largest single-day protest in U.S. history, to advocate for legislation and policies related to human rights and other issues, including women’s rights.
Her films have continually tackled the effects of poverty and immigration on women and children in the United States. Mendoza was named one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” by Filmmaker, the magazine of independent film. She is a co-founder of The Soze Agency, a worker-owned creative agency where she served as creative director for campaigns fighting for immigration reform, criminal justice reform, incarcerated mothers and women’s rights. Mendoza is also a co-founder and member of the critically acclaimed Resistance Revival Chorus. In addition, she authored The Ones Who Don’t Stay, a novel that takes readers on an inspiring and heartwarming journey from a small Colombian town to life in the fast lane of Los Angeles as a mother and daughter struggle to overcome war, poverty and heartbreak, and learn to survive on their own.
As a part of her discussion, Mendoza will talk about the book she was featured in, Together We Rise: The Women’s March — Behind the Scenes at the Protest Heard Around the World. The book includes Mendoza’s personal story and the stories of other organizers about the Women’s March efforts and reflected on the collective journey of all involved. Together We Rise is the definitive oral and visual chronicle of the momentous event. Featuring contributions from writers, political figures, actresses, artists and journalists, the book offers an unprecedented access to one of the most galvanizing and ongoing movements in American history.
Mendoza’s discussion, a part of Park University’s 2017-18 Year of Diversity series of events, is held in partnership with the National Archives at Kansas City, Northland Progress and Om Prana Yoga.
