    Posted: 05/28/14 The Museum at Prairiefire (MAP) was established in 2010 based on a pioneering content partnership with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and recently opened its doors in Overland Park, KS, a rapidly growing, vibrant community in the Kansas City metro area. Focused on enhancing public understanding of natural history and science, this non-collecting ''startup'' museum will present continuously changing world-class traveling exhibitions organized by AMNH, a Discovery Room, engaging permanent halls and experiences, education programs, science video and more. The Museum is the cultural anchor of Prairiefire, a $430M, 58-acre mixed-use project that integrates residential, office, retail and entertainment. Volunteers play an important role in shaping the visitor experience at the Museum by providing general welcome and orientation, explaining exhibits and concepts, and helping visitors engage with the science on display. The Museum has an active and passionate corps of volunteers that is set to grow significantly over time. The Museum also plans on developing an attractive internship program that will attract talented students to the Museum. The Volunteer Coordinator will play a central role in recruiting, training and managing volunteers for the Museum. Responsibilities will include: ? Recruitment. Collaborate in the development of a recruitment strategy and implement across different channels. Screen volunteer and intern applications, manage the application and interview process, including background and reference checks. Provide volunteer orientation to all incoming volunteers and interns. ? Volunteer Placement and management. Guide volunteers toward opportunities that match their interests and strengths. Ensure volunteers are placed into effective and satisfying roles. Address any grievances or concerns. Track volunteer involvement. ? Recognition. Develop and implement volunteer recognition strategies. ? System management. Effectively leverage the Museum's volunteer management system; continuously update it and keep it current. Provide reports on an as-needed basis. This position will report to the Executive Director at least initially. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help shape an institution that will educate and inspire generations of visitors. The position may require work on nights, weekends and holidays. We are looking for the following skill sets and characteristics in the Volunteer Coordinator: ? Passionate about the mission of the Museum to enhance public understanding of science and natural history ? Prior experience in volunteer management is desirable ? People person with excellent personal skills; very personable and accessible, able to motivate a diverse group of individuals ? Methodical and well organized, great organizational and communication skills ? Excellent problem solving skills, initiative, and ability to think on your feet and get the job done ?
